This next-generation spike also includes the latest in carbon fiber spike plate technology. Inspired by the plate shape of competitive road marathon models, the MD-X spike plate has been strategically bottom-loaded in the forefoot where it then swoops into the midsole for optimal rigidity and propulsion. New Balance also ditched the bulky spike wells and individual screw-in spikes and upgraded to titanium spikes that are cemented directly on the spike plate which saves valuable weight and allows the MD-X to have as much FuelCell foam as legally possible. Since the MD-X is looking to be crowned as the king of spikes, with its specific attributes such as the non-replaceable spikes, they won't be the shoe runners wear across the parking lot, rather they are made to be reserved for primetime races on the track.
